OUR LEADERSHIP
Committed to the Cause
From a young age, I've been interested in immunology because of my food allergies. Since the pandemic started, I've been looking for creative ways to become involved in our community in the immunology field. Recognizing that many families have lost their jobs and are experiencing financial hardships, I understand that many households are unable to afford basic medical equipment and products if their insurance doesn't cover it. To help defray the costs associated with allergies and asthma in our community, I came up with the idea to collect asthma inhaler spacers and unused epinephrine to redistribute to individuals in our community that do not have equitable access to these essential medical supplies.
In many cases, people no longer need their spacers for various reasons. These spacers can be reused by other children once they are examined and sterilized. Furthermore, in my own experiences I've often been extremely nervous to use my Epi-Pen or Auvi Q. Patients with allergies could use expired Epi-Pens and Auvi Q's to practice injecting the medication into oranges (which are similar to the feel of a human thigh.) This practice may reduce anxiety during an allergic reaction, as these children will have gained significant confidence in using their life-saving device.
We are grateful to all of our physician and community partners for hosting donation boxes and our volunteers who serve our cause.
